1 Bed Renovated Cottage 20m from Beach

Welcome to our rustic chic beach house set footsteps away from one of Sri Lanka's most secluded and unspoilt beaches. This is a simple yet comfortable retreat to relax, connect with nature and experience life on an authentic working fisherman's beach. It's also a fantastic base for wider explorations of Sri Lanka; from shopping in beautiful Galle fort to birdwatching, safaris, turtle or whale watching, getting into the surf scene at Hiriketiya or blissing out with an ayurvedic massage.

Good to know

The house has one good sized bedroom with a queen sized four poster bed that opens out to a beautiful seating area and connects to the outdoor bathroom with shower and an enormous tub. There's also an indoor bathroom with shower, toilet and his and hers sinks. We have chosen not to install air conditioning as we prefer a more natural feel and find the house to be very cool from it's design. There are ceiling fans throughout however which we find ample. To the other side of the large hallway, which has a very comfortable lounging chair and a desk, is a well equipped kitchen (although please note there is no oven, just a powerful 2 ring gas hob), a living space with 2 handmade teak daybeds and an indoor dining table. There is also a separate room with daybed that we use for reading and general chilling out. There is a fully enclosed garden to the front with 2 sunloungers and a rustic 'ambalama' for outdoor dining. While the house was designed for a couple and has only one bedroom, it is a very large space and the reading room and living space daybeds can be set up for sleeping and so may suit families. Please do send a message if interested in this option and we can check it will be suitable. There is wifi, a safety deposit box, hairdryer, yoga mats, snorkelling equipment, body board and bluetooth speaker for guests to enjoy using. A list of recommended restaurants, places and activities will be emailed prior to arrival.

Neighborhood

The 2 km of Mawella beach is very special as it's one of the few in Sri Lanka that is pretty much always suitable for swimming. It's also very quiet and is a wonderful place to see the local fishermen at work, they often appreciate a hand with their boats if you're feeling strong!Turn left on the beach from our property and the waves get better for body boarding or turn right into the anchorage for usually gentle swimming. It's a perfect stretch of beach for running, yoga, meditation and beach games and in season there is a rustic beach restaurant midway along. There is a little snorkelling to be sometimes enjoyed at the far right end of the beach but we can also arrange, for a small cost, boat trips to a snorkelling spot with a local fisherman. You can alternatively take a tuktuk there or walk in about 35 minutes. We call it 'Coral Beach'. Lalith the housekeeper can also take you for a small fee on his raft for a tour of the nearby lagoon. This is such a beautiful spot, full of nature and is particularly recommended early in the morning or at sunset. There are lots of surf breaks around the area and plenty of places to rent boards or organise lessons. We tend to head for Hiriketiya or Unakaruwa (both about 15 minutes in a tuktuk) and there are also companies that can come to the house and take you to the best spots for some training. We LOVE Bandula surf school for this! Ananda can arrange various types of massage to be enjoyed at the house, or there are a number of fairly local ayurvedic spas we will recommend on booking. It's also possible to go turtle watching, whale watching (in season), to visit temples, go shopping in Galle and we can help organise safaris to Yala and Udawalawe or birdwatching at Kalametiya Sanctuary or Bundala National Park.

We can arrange transport, including safe and reliable airport or other property transfers. Once arrived we can also organise three wheelers or scooter hire. The property is about a 2 and a half hour drive from the airport and is about 7km from the nearest towns; Tangalle in one direction and Dickwella in the other. We tend to use Tangalle which has a great fruit and vegetable market on Wednesdays and Sundays and also has a number of restaurants and bars, shops, a pharmacy and a 2 very handy supermarkets called Cargills and Keels that are an easy place to pick up provisions including international items. Hiriketiya also has a huge number of restaurants and cafes and also a few shops like Clearpoint to pick up groceries. Please note that there are very limited facilities in the area immediately surrounding the house although musical tuk tuks often appear with fresh morning bread, curd, snacks or ice cream!
